INDUSTRIAL SECTOR ANALYSIS
- California export growth in Q1 2001
was broad-based, with 19 of the top 20 export categories experiencing
growth. The top 14 export categories were all up and 8
of the top 10 showed double digit increases over the same period
in 2000.
- Exports of computer and electronic
products increased 9 percent in Q1 2001 to total nearly $15 billion.
Computer and electronic products is California’s largest export
commodity accounting for more than 49 percent of total California
exports through the first three months of the year.
- Exports of nonelectrical machinery,
California’s second largest export sector, increased 16.9 percent
in Q1 2001 totalling $3.4 billion.
- Other top sectors showing strong
double-digit growth in the first quarter include:
transportation equipment ($2.4 billion, up 25 percent), chemicals
($1.3 billion, up 26 percent), miscellaneous manufactured
commodities ($1.1 billion, up 15 percent), and electrical equipment
($988 million, up 11 percent).
- Exports of agricultural products also
showed strong growth in the first quarter. Exports of
processed foods ($923 million, up 13 percent) and agricultural
products ($874 million, up 25 percent) both demonstrated strong
gains through the first three months of 2001.
